Mini Dresses – “THREE” EP

Following the outfit’s brilliant past releases, Austin-based Mini Dresses is back with their most recent release, THREE, a super saturated, mystical EP that captured my attention at first spin.

The opening track, “In Two,” centers around a jangly, modulative, simple guitar hook that’s cut in by powerful, cooing vocals and driving drum beats. Mini Dresses’s are masters of easy-going, woozy choruses that bloom and blossom like the fragility and beauty of flowers. This is also true for the album’s slower tunes, “Been Out For Days” and “Strangers”.

The EP’s last track, in my opinion, stands out from the rest. Aptly named, “Other Ones” begins with a passive aggressive drive from the muddy bass and drums. Beautiful, haunting melodies enter and are joined with distant, harping guitar work. The track’s first half flickers with tender energy. Slowly, the instruments play with more and more assertion and punch, but just enough to be quickly lulled into a sunny haze as terrifyingly catchy hooks drone you into silence.
