Oakland’s Jackson Phillips adopts the moniker Day Wave when he’s creating his West Coast, big wave rock. At just under four minutes, “We Try But We Don’t Fit In” makes a clear statement as the title suggests. The guitars cut through the mix like rolling tides, rhythmically organic, but not without metallic precision and glimmer. Phillips’s vocal arrangements cake the track like sea foam, hazy and saturated. He sings “we’re between the things that we’re supposed to be,” but his song is homey and promotes a liberation that comes exclusively from living just as you are. The track swells before receding into a glittering guitar instrumentals. The Day Wave rises again.
